Based on the region of the agency’s activities, the main efforts were focused on detecting and solving crimes related to the smuggling of timber and timber products. In this area, 28 criminal cases were initiated, including 12 against members of organized criminal groups

Most of the criminal cases were initiated on the facts of timber smuggling, committed with the use of fictitious foreign economic contracts and declaration of false information in the declarations

“In the course of investigation of criminal cases at the points of receipt and shipment of timber, employees of the East-Siberian Line Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia on transport together with the Irkutsk Customs seized 4.2 thousand cubic meters of sawn timber and 497 cubic meters of round timber prepared for illegal export abroad,” said Evgeny Mikhnevich, deputy head of the Irkutsk Customs.

In the fight against smuggling of narcotic drugs and potent substances, the Irkutsk customs officers initiated 3 criminal cases (Articles 226.1, 229.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). Customs operatives seized 1.6 kg of narcotic drugs (marijuana, garmala), psychotropic (modafinil, phenobarbital) and potent substances (sibutramine) from illegal circulation

Irkutsk customs officers initiated one criminal case for violation of currency legislation, having uncovered a scheme to transfer more than 160 million rubles abroad under the guise of a foreign trade contract

In addition, during the year Irkutsk customs officers initiated 2,735 cases of administrative offenses, including more than 1.5 thousand cases on smuggling constituent elements of the CAO RF (non-declaration, non-compliance with prohibitions and restrictions). Within the framework of administrative offense cases, Irkutsk Customs collected about 16.5 million rubles in fines from violators.
