Customs officers detained members of an organized crime group involved in smuggling jewelry into Russia from abroad

Sheremetyevo customs officers and operatives of the Federal Customs Service of Russia detained members of an organized crime group smuggling jewelry into Russia from abroad for resale on the country’s domestic market.
One of the smugglers was detained at Sheremetyevo airport. In the luggage of a 34-year-old Russian who arrived on a Dubai-Moscow flight, inspectors found jewelry worth 23 million rubles hidden from customs control. In total – six pairs of earrings, seven necklaces, three rings, three bracelets and two chains with pendants.
The examination established that the items were made of white and yellow gold with inserts of emeralds, diamonds and sapphires.
Further measures were taken to detain other participants of the criminal group – the organizer, a 53-year-old Russian woman, and her accomplice, a 37-year-old citizen of Kazakhstan.
In the places of their actual residence, including in elite cottage settlements, searches were conducted, during which items, documents and electronic media were seized.
A criminal case under part 3 of article 226.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation was opened against the suspects. Two defendants were taken into custody, one was placed under house arrest.
