On January 26, customs officers celebrate their professional holiday – International Customs Day.

International customs cooperation contributes to more successful fight against customs offenses and smuggling, strengthening of interstate relations, dynamic development of trade between countries and in some cases becomes the starting point and basis for their deeper economic integration

Smolensk Customs contributes to the development of customs cooperation. In 2023, 192 international requests were sent to the customs authorities of Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Abkhazia, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan and the PRC.

“Taking into account the geographical location, Smolensk customs officers have the closest ties with their Belarusian colleagues. Smolensk customs for many years was a platform for meetings and meetings of customs services of Russia and Belarus in the construction of the Customs Union and the Union State of the two countries. Here were tested many technologies of customs control and customs operations, information interaction between the customs services of the two countries. The accumulated experience was later used within the framework of the Eurasian Economic Union”, – comments Rustam Yakubov, Head of Smolensk Customs Office

The cooperation with Belarusian colleagues continues successfully today. On a regular basis, cooperation in criminal and administrative proceedings is carried out. In 2023 Smolensk Customs sent 171 requests to the customs authorities of the Republic of Belarus, and 74 requests were received from our Belarusian colleagues

With Belarusian colleagues there is an operational exchange of information necessary for the successful work of mobile groups to stop the importation of goods from the list of food embargoes to Russia. This is information on the issuance of veterinary and phytosanitary certificates, other accompanying documents, on the crossing of the external border by a particular vehicle and others

Zapadny customs post of Smolensk customs is a specialized customs authority and interacts with the customs authorities of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus on the customs procedure of customs transit and confirmation of the actual export of goods from the customs territory of the EAEU

In total, in 2023, the Western Customs Post sent 2.3 thousand requests and information messages to the customs authorities of the Republic of Belarus and the Russian Federation on issues related to the movement of goods under the customs procedure of customs transit and received from them 2.3 thousand requests and information messages, 983 requests and information messages were sent and received on issues related to the actual export of goods

The history of this holiday dates back to January 26, 1953, when the first constituent session of the Customs Cooperation Council, which was later called the World Customs Organization (WCO), was held in the capital Brussels. Thirty years later, this date was chosen as International Customs Officer’s Day.
