A miniature bonsai tree failed to pass customs control at Novosibirsk airport

The potted bonsai was found by officers of the Tolmachevo Airport customs post of Novosibirsk Customs in the possession of a female passenger who flew to Novosibirsk after a vacation in Phuket, Thailand.

A 39-year-old resident of Novosibirsk tried to import the exotic plant weighing almost 500 grams together with soil into Russia. She was not aware of the fact that the miniature tree is a regulated product, potentially a source of pests and therefore subject to prohibitions and restrictions on importation into Russia. The tourist bought the object of dendroart on vacation and carried it for personal use. She did not have an export phytosanitary certificate for the live souvenir
The Novosibirsk Customs issued a decision to impose an administrative penalty in the form of a fine. The goods were seized by an employee of the Siberian Interregional Department of Rosselkhoznadzor
