Sheremetyevo Customs officials donated 17 icons painted in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to the Russian Orthodox Church
They were detained by customs officers in the early 2000s when tourists tried to take them through the “green” corridor without declaring and providing authorization documents. After their seizure, the icons were not claimed for a long time, and later, by the decision of the Khimki court, they were turned into the property of the state
Eight of them, including a four-part icon with images of the Mother of God and the crucifixion of Christ, “The Mortification of Evil Hearts,” “Quench My Sorrows,” “For the Sorrow of the Suffering,” “The Recovery of the Lost,” as well as the icons “The Miracle of the Great Martyr George against the Serpent” and “The Resurrection of Christ,” were handed over to the Holy Trinity Sergius Lavra at the Church of the Resurrection of Christ in Sergiev Posad
Nine will be placed in the church in honor of the Chernigov Icon of the Mother of God in the Vladimir region. Among them are “Great Martyr Catherine,” “St. Nicholas the Wonderworker,” “Our Lady of Kazan,” and “Great Martyr Panteleimon.”
