Customs officers at the Moscow air hub have detected smuggled goods worth 4 billion rubles from citizens in 2023

In 2023, customs authorities of the Moscow air hub recorded more than 11,000 violations in the movement of goods and cash by individuals. The total value of smuggled items amounted to almost 4 billion rubles. In 40% of cases, citizens violated customs rules when crossing the border at Sheremetyevo airport
Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo and Vnukovo customs officers initiated 97 criminal cases and 10,973 cases of administrative offenses.
The largest share of criminal cases was committed at Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo and Vnukovo airports
The largest share of crimes and offenses was recorded in the illegal movement of currency: more than 60 crime reports were registered, which became the basis for 40 criminal cases under Art. 200.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (cash smuggling), 8,429 cases of administrative offenses were initiated under Art. 16.4 (non-declaration or false declaration of cash). This is 73% of the total number of facts of illegal movement of cash detected by customs officers across the country last year
Russian rubles, U.S. dollars and euros were most often smuggled from Turkey, the UAE and Azerbaijan. They were exported to the same destinations, as well as to China, Uzbekistan, Serbia and Israel.

Citizens also attempted to smuggle jewelry and wristwatches, brand-name clothing, electronics, cultural property, alcohol and tobacco products, as well as narcotic drugs, psychotropic and potent substances and their precursors.
