3.5 kg of jade a foreigner tried to smuggle through Irkutsk airport

Officers of Irkutsk customs during customs control of an international flight Irkutsk-Beijing revealed five natural rough stones of different shapes, sizes and shades in the luggage of a passenger.

A customs examination later confirmed that the minerals discovered by customs officers were untreated jade, weighing 3.5 kg.

The Chinese citizen intended to take it out of the Baikal region as a souvenir for a friend, but he did not have any authorization documents

Unprocessed jade is a type of mineral raw material and is included in the list of goods for which there is a permissive procedure for movement across the customs border of the Eurasian Economic Union. Export of mineral raw materials by individuals as goods for personal use is prohibited

The Irkutsk Customs initiated a case of administrative offense under Article 16.3 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation for failure to comply with prohibitions and restrictions. The violator faces a penalty in the form of a fine with or without confiscation of the subject of the administrative offense

It should be noted that officials of the customs post of Irkutsk Airport in 2024 initiated 319 cases on administrative offenses under Article 16.3 of the CAO RF, of which 3 – in respect of unprocessed jade. Air passengers also tried to smuggle alcoholic beverages, brass knuckles, knives, cigarettes, products of plant and animal origin.
