Dagestan Customs officers held a training session in the departure hall of the international terminal at Makhachkala Airport with the participation of officials from the state executive authorities and organizations that are members of the Interdepartmental Commission for the development of recommendations and decision-making on combating the illegal movement of radioactive materials across the customs border

According to the training program, the actions of Dagestan customs officials in case of detection of a neutron source of radiation during customs control and interaction with territorial executive authorities were practiced

The following situation was played out during the training exercise: in the hand luggage of a passenger crossing the customs border of the Russian Federation at Makhachkala Airport air checkpoint, the presence of a source of increased level of ionizing radiation in excess of 1 μ3v/h was detected. The passenger was traveling along the green corridor, did not submit a passenger customs declaration, and did not declare any goods prohibited for transportation across the border. The sensor of the radiation control system of the SSRK “Yantar” was triggered

Officers of Dagestan Customs and representatives of other agencies responded to the situation in a coordinated and clear manner. With observance of radiation safety measures in respect of the neutron radiation object, additional radiation control was carried out with the use of technical means of customs control of fissile and radioactive materials available at the Dagestan Customs and other agencies involved

After the training, an interdepartmental commission of representatives of Dagestan Customs and other federal executive authorities will analyze the exercise and prepare proposals for further improvement of measures in the field of radiation safety and the order of interaction between regulatory and law enforcement agencies in this area
