Irkutsk customs uncovered 17 million rubles worth of timber smuggling

Irkutsk Customs has opened a series of criminal cases against an organized criminal group (OCG) involved in smuggling softwood lumber. Its members illegally exported more than 2.2 thousand cubic meters of timber from the Bratsk district of the Irkutsk region to the countries of the near abroad

Based on the results of operational and investigative measures conducted jointly with officers of the Bratsk Regional Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia for Transport under the supervision of the East Siberian Transport Prosecutor’s Office, customs officers found that in 2020 and in 2021 pine, larch and spruce lumber worth more than 17 million rubles was sent abroad using forged documents – fictitious sales contracts and documents with false information about the origin of the goods.

The Inquiry Department of the Irkutsk Customs initiated 5 criminal cases under part 3 of article 226.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation on smuggling of a strategically important resource – timber, committed by an organized group on a large scale.

The cases were initiated against the head of the timber exporting company and other persons involved. The investigation is ongoing
