The exhibition is devoted to the problems of illegal trafficking and trade in rare species of animals and their derivatives. The expositions include stuffed animals and birds, many of which belong to endangered species, tusks, horns and paws that have become objects of smuggling

The “Smugglers’ Treasures” project introduces us to one of the most lucrative types of shady business – the illegal trade in rare animals. All over the world for the sake of meat, skins, skin, other parts of animals for making perfumes, medicines, jewelry and breeding exotic pets are destroyed a huge number of species of fauna, including those on the brink of extinction, – said senior researcher of the Darwin Museum Natalia Krasnykh.

The illegal trade in rare species of animals ranks second only to drug trafficking in terms of turnover. They bring everything: live animals, animal products, stuffed animals and the like. Live mammals, birds, reptiles, fish and insects are transported in the most unthinkable and inappropriate conditions, so more than half of living creatures are killed during transportation

Albert Duzhak, acting first deputy chief of Murmansk Customs, told the adults and children gathered at the opening of the exhibition about the role and capabilities of customs authorities in detecting and suppressing this type of smuggling.

They can scan cars, large containers, trucks, and even railroad cars, as well as the luggage of individuals, and can show what is inside a person. Invaluable help to people is provided by service dogs, which undergo special training,” Albert Duzhak shared the details of the control. – If we talk about the fate of such goods detained at the border, they become exhibits in museums or are transferred to zoos
