At Zhukovsky airport, officers from the Russian Federal Customs Service’s Main Directorate for Combating Smuggling and Domodedovo Customs found 19 rare parrots while checking air cargo from Kyrgyzstan

The parrots arrived in Moscow addressed to a 63-year-old Muscovite zoologist. The recipient’s documents listed several hundred parrots – wavy, corellas, nerazzluchniki, amadins. However, when inspecting the cages with birds, the inspectors assumed that there were rare specimens among them

The parrots were seized and submitted for examination. The suspicions of the customs officers were confirmed, the consignment contained 4 mottled rosellas and 15 red-fronted hopping parrots (New Zealand cockatiels). These species are endangered, their export is regulated by the CITES Convention, and a permit from Rosprirodnadzor is required to move them across the customs border of the EAEU

The variegated rosellas and red-footed parrots have now been transferred to Ded Moroz’s Zoo in Veliky Ustyug, while the rest of the birds have been returned to the sender in Osh (Kyrgyzstan)

A case of administrative offense under Article 16.3 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation (failure to comply with prohibitions and restrictions) was initiated against the Russian citizen. The man is already under investigation under part 1 of article 226.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (smuggling of especially valuable wild animals) for the illegal import of birds in 2023

The case is under consideration in the Domodedovo court.
