Irkutsk customs officers found a carpet made of brown bear skin in the travel bag of an airline passenger

The offender turned out to be a Chinese citizen. Without any documents in a travel bag, she tried to export to Mongolia a carpet made of natural brown bear skin more than 150 cm long with preserved fur of the head, as well as the tail, paws, claws and finger crumbs.

The woman explained that she had purchased the item as a souvenir from a retail outlet in Irkutsk

The skin was sent for customs examination. Specialists confirmed that it is a derivative that belongs to the parts of specially protected animals included in the CITES list

Irkutsk customs is considering the issue of initiating administrative cases on the facts of non-declaration and non-compliance with prohibitions and restrictions.

The brown bear is one of the species, the circulation of which is regulated by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES Convention).

When moving across the customs border, CITES objects are subject to mandatory written declaration with the submission of authorization documents to the customs authority.
