9 criminal and 515 cases on administrative offenses were initiated by the Buryat Customs according to the results of work for the 1st quarter of 2024. The largest number of criminal offenses was committed in the timber export channel

From the total number of criminal cases: 3 cases were initiated under part 1 of article 226.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation on the facts of smuggling of strategically important resources (timber) on a large scale; 4 cases – under part 3 of article 226.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation on the facts of smuggling of strategically important resources (timber) on a large scale, committed by organized groups. The total amount of illegally moved timber is about 8.8 thousand cubic meters for the sum of almost 103 million rubles. Buryat customs officers opened two more criminal cases under Articles 173.1 (part 1) and 173.2 (part 1) for creating a legal entity through front persons and providing a document for illegal creation of a legal entity, respectively

Of the total number of administrative cases initiated in the first quarter of 2024, the largest number of violations related to non-compliance with prohibitions and restrictions, as well as non-declaration or false declaration of goods

Alexander Martynov, deputy head of the Buryat Customs, notes that cases of moving goods with concealment from customs control have become more frequent. Trying to illegally import commercial lots of goods into Russia under the guise of goods for personal use or goods prohibited for transportation, individuals hide goods under clothing, fix them on the body, hide them in vehicles, in spare wheels, etc. Among these goods, clothes and shoes, tobacco products, cell phones, fresh fish are predominant. In  Q1 2023, the items most commonly offended were wood and wood products, tobacco, and consumer goods.

In Q1 2024, administrative fines amounting to nearly 3.5 million rubles were collected as a result of the consideration of cases on administrative offenses, including those initiated earlier.

The property (lumber, construction materials) with a total value of more than 1 million rubles was transferred to the authorized bodies. In addition, foreign currency – 40 thousand American dollars illegally transported across the customs border – was returned to the federal budget
