73 thousand undeclared U.S. dollars were found by Ussuriysk customs officers in the possession of a Russian citizen when crossing the border at the border crossing point Pogranichny. The Russian tried to illegally export the money to China. The man is facing criminal liability

A Russian citizen as part of a tourist group arrived at the border crossing point of the IACP Pogranichny on a passenger bus bound for China. When verbally questioned, he stated that he had no goods prohibited for export from Russia. However, the man was visibly nervous, which made the customs officers suspicious

When customs officers searched the tourist’s hand luggage in his breast bag, they found seven packs of $100 bills – a total of $73,000

The offender said he was aware of the restrictions on cash exports, so he decided to smuggle the money out of the country

The Ussuriysk Customs initiated criminal proceedings against the citizen under Part 2 Article 200.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation for smuggling cash in a particularly large amount. The money was seized. The offender faces a fine of ten to fifteen times the amount of illegally moved cash, or restriction of freedom for up to four years

From March 2, 2022, no more than $10,000 in foreign currency can be taken out of Russia. Cash rubles can still be taken out without restrictions, but if the amount in rubles, including together with foreign currency, exceeds the equivalent of $10,000, it must be declared.

The Ussuriyskaya Customs also reminds that currently entrepreneurs and legal entities have the right to receive cash, which belongs to them under agreements (contracts), from foreign partners. A mandatory condition for the importation of cash is its declaration.
