The driver of a Toyota Crown car with the state registration plates covered and headlights not working was driving through the checkpoint of the 85th km of the Magadan – Yakutsk highway and crossed the border of the Magadan Special Economic Zone (SEZ) at high speed without responding to the customs inspector’s demand to stop for customs control.

Customs officers promptly sent the information to the front office of the Department of Internal Affairs, and patrols nearest to the scene of the incident were immediately sent to search for the car

A car similar in description was found at a distance of 40 km from the checkpoint. The driver attempted to escape from pursuit at high speed, creating a dangerous situation on the road. After firing warning shots, the police opened fire on the wheels of the car, causing the vehicle to come to a halt.

The driver was apprehended. He turned out to be a 32-year-old man with a previous conviction for repeated drunk driving and a revoked driver’s license. An expert examination showed that he was under the influence of drugs. In addition, it was found that the offender’s car has no state registration, technical inspection and MTPL policy

Magadan customs officers initiated proceedings against the person on administrative offense in the field of customs business  on the fact of moving a vehicle across the border of the customs control zone  without the permission of the customs authority (article 16.5 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation). Also, within the framework of their competence, the police initiated three more administrative and one criminal case against the offender
