Smolensk customs officers prevented more than 1.1 thousand tons of waste from entering the country

Smolensk Customs makes a significant contribution to Russia’s environmental safety. In 2023, 89 vehicles with waste weighing 1,117 tons were stopped and returned to the country of departure by officials of the mobile groups of the Department of Control over Import and Turnover of Goods of the customs.

“Mobile groups of Smolensk customs returned the following categories of goods to the territory of the Republic of Belarus: 836 tons of polymer waste, 118 tons of scrap metal, 77 tons of waste paper, 66 tons of car tires and 20 tons of glass waste”, – said Ilya Zalmenzon, head of the department of control over import and turnover of goods of Smolensk customs

Waste is not allowed to be imported due to either a ban on its import or the lack of necessary authorization documents. The rules of transboundary movement of waste are approved by the Government of the Russian Federation from 17.07.2003 № 442. They establish the procedure for importing waste for the purpose of its environmentally safe use, export of waste from the territory of the Russian Federation, as well as transit of waste through its territory

Taking into account the geographical location and specifics of the Russian-Belarusian border section, the main role in this area is played by mobile groups, which are part of the department of control over import and turnover of goods
