Samaran customs officers prevented the illegal export of a cat lemur to Kazakhstan
Employees of the mobile group of the Samara Customs, together with the Border Control Department of the FSB of Russia in the Orenburg region, prevented the illegal export of a cat lemur to Kazakhstan. During the inspection of a vehicle at the Orsk checkpoint, it was found that a cage with a pet lemur named Zhorgetta was being transported. The owner explained that she was taking the exotic animal to Kazakhstan to increase the population of this species, but she did not obtain the necessary documents for its transportation across the border. The cat lemur (Katta) is included in Appendix I of the CITES Convention as an endangered species. To export it from Russia, an export permit from CITES, issued by the Federal Service for Supervision of Natural Resources (Rosprirodnadzor), is required. A case of administrative offense has been initiated by the Samara Customs for non-compliance with prohibitions and restrictions on the export of goods from the Russian Federation (Article 16.3 of the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation). The issue of transferring the lemur to a specialized institution that provides services in the storage and care of animals is being resolved in conjunction with Rosprirodnadzor.
