300,000 rubles fine imposed on sailor for smuggling 335 liters of alcohol
A member of a ship’s crew has been fined 300,000 rubles in a criminal case brought by the Sakhalin Customs for smuggling a large quantity of alcoholic beverages. At the end of 2023, during operational activities on a ship arriving in the port of Nevelsk from the Republic of Korea, employees of the Sakhalin Customs and the FSB discovered a hiding place with alcoholic beverages. The Sakhalin Customs initiated a criminal case against a crew member for the illegal transportation of a large quantity of alcoholic beverages across the customs border (part 1 of article 200.2 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). He attempted to illegally import 600 bottles (335 liters) of contraband alcoholic beverages. The market value of the goods was estimated by experts at 871,000 rubles. The foreign-made products, purchased in Pusan, were hidden in the ship’s fuel tank while other crew members were absent during the ship’s stay in South Korea. The crew member was aware of the need to declare alcoholic beverages in excess of 3 liters, but decided to save on customs duties and hide the goods from customs control.
